Final Preliminary task&Evaluation

Using Adobe InDesign I create my final preliminary task for a school magazine.I used my design idea as a template and copied the same layout and colour scheme as it worked effectively for the purpose of the magazine.

Layout/style:
For my preliminary task i focused on using the colours, yellow, white and blue so the magazine would have a theme throughout. These colours are all seen in the school logo therefore will relate to the purpose of the school magazine. I decided to use the pictures taken round the school and use close up shots so it would be clear to the readers what the magazine was all about. The layout was very simple and i decided to not make the magazine look formal as it would appeal to more students being very simple and easy to read. The magazine contains many visuals so is easy to understand what the magazine is about.

Front cover:
My front cover continues the colour scheme of white, yellow and blue. These colours all compliment each other and also are easy to see against the background. In Adobe InDesign i used the shape tool to create a circle and then filled it in yellow,i created a text box over it to show clearly what the price was and make it feel more like a realistic magazine.Yet again using the shape tool, i created a long blue and yellow rectangle as a top boarder to create format within the magazine that would go throughout. Also including the Haydon news website and twitter account would attract readers and make the magazine more well known.

Full bleed:
The image i used was of an action shot of me about to pot the ball into the snooker table. By using an action shot of me playing snooker, as it relates to the main story in the magazine of the snooker champion revealing her success. The picture is bright and colourful and with me having a bright smile on my face, appeals to the readers as is warming. I believe this picture was appropriate to use as it was of a student therefore relates to the purpose of the school magazine also will attract a lot of readers as it a fun and light hearted picture.

Content page:
The font used 'Copper Black' is bold so would clearly stand out against the background image and especially using white is clear for the readers to read. The title for both pages was done in the same font, however in a large font size so it would stand out against the rest of the text.Using yellow font on the content page for page numbers was done to differ from the white text and continue with the colour scheme. Also the pictures used on the content page are all in a set collum on the left to make it easier for the readers to view. The faded out picture of the school playground in the background continues the theme of the school magazine.

Overall i am pleased with my final design as it follows a colour scheme and set layout throughout similar to a real magazine. The pictures used are also varied and are of a good quality.
To improve i would :
  • Use even better quality pictures, especially for my front cover.
  • Use images that are taken with a professional camera instead of a phone
  • i would include a school logo throughout the magazine to relate to Haydon school.
  • Including social networking and logos for these.
  • Use a more appropriate font style and size
