Promotional methods

Promoting my magazine is key to make it a success therefore i have begun to think about the various ways of doing this effectively. The numerous amount of methods to promote a magazine means it is easily to increase the readership and circulation of my music magazine. For example, billboards launch parties, bus shelters etc are all effective types of ways to promote a magazine.  When choosing my promotional methods it is key to see what would appeal to my target audience of young people and also having to invest a lot of money from my magazine into expensive types of promotion such as billboards and buses as these are seen all over the country and even world.

One of the most popular ways to promote a product or company is on a billboard which is typically found in a large city, near shopping centres or busy roads. They are known to be very effective as they are very large in size therefore will attract a lot of attention easily and are most often located in a busy area to gain a lot of attraction. I plan to create a very vibrant and unique billboard as this will stand out from the other well known billboards therefore entice the audience. The billboard will include key information such as release date, networking sites and a little teaser of what the magazine is going to offer. I will have to keep in my target audience therefore will located it where young people are most likely to be.

Another promotional method my magazine will be using adverts on public transported such as adverts located on buses. This is a very effective method as even people not travelling by bus themself are most likely to see buses in their everyday life. As buses drive across the country at all times it will reach a vast majority of the public therefore be very effective. Also this method is key as the majority of my target audience use public transport daily to get to work or school. Similarly using underground trains to promote my magazine will be equally as effective. As by using very vibrant colours and images it will clearly stand out against the dull walls of inside a train station.

I believe these promotional methods chosen for my music magazine will be very effective as they will appear across the country and are most likely to be seen in people's everyday life. When designing these adverts i will include vibrant colours and strong pictures that will stand out against the already well known companies and products. It is important to make sure the adverts fit within the target audiences interests to make the magazine the most successful it can be.

Production diary #7

This week I have been clearly identifying everything I need to do in the half term so I can have good time management by giving myself enough time to do everything to the best standard. I have now moved on from researching ideas and now I am finally on to planning my music magazine. Already coming up with my name and ideas of masthead, I am now looking more in detail for my magazine.
By creating my image ideas I have thought more into my photoshoot for my music magazine. I was really inspired by the images as they gave exactly the urban feel I want to my magazine. In the half term I am planning to fine a place in London that will link with my magazine. I plan to use somewhere in the streets of London that is very unique and will stand out in my magazine. Preferably somewhere with graffiti as this will have a lot of vibrant and bold colours which I want to appear throughout my music magazine. I would mainly do a photoshoot in the daylight so it is clear on the settings and will be clear to the reader the trendy fashion my model is wearing. However, I will experiment with night time shoots with good lighting as this will clearly identify more edgy and powerful pictures.
Also for my photoshoots I believe props and costumes are a key concepts as they will make obvious to the reader what the magazine is a about. Using props such as microphones and very trendy clothing will be key for my music magazine as everything needs to be 'OnPoint'.

Colour scheme ideas

After creating both my name and masthead for my music magazine, i decided another key concept for a music magazine is the colour scheme. Magzines will use colour scheme to make there magazine recognizable and attract readers. Throughout my magazine i will use just simple colours of black, white and grey so my magazine isn't busy with bright colours therefore will be more formal and appeal to more of my target audience. I am most likely to use red in my magazine as it connates danger and violence which a R&B magazine is most stereotypically viewed. For example, in both Vibe,Q and XXL magazine they use a very similar colour scheme of black, white and red. This links with the artists featured on the magazine and the body language used by them. Also, red can connate love or sex will attract the readers as for example cheryl cole sex appeal with attract male readers and the use of her red lips link with the masthead of Q and there colour scheme.
Also in my music magazine i would be interested in using hints of gold as it connates both power and wealth that the artists featured in my magazine will have. It will also link will alot of props/costumes used in photoshoots such as gold chains and other jewellery.

Image ideas

Using PowerPoint I decided to gather images from the internet and social networking sites to show clearly what I would want to be seen in my music magazine. Ideally I would like to recreate a majority of these images as I'm very inspired by them as they give an urban and current feel, which exactly what my music magazine is about.
The first set of pictures of Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea highlight how I intend my front cover to be powerful and give a statement. Both wearing just simple bold colours however the statement chains, clothes and body language will grabs the readers attention. Emphasised in many of the pictures included, i would include a very urban setting in my photoshoots such as graffiti, brick walls all on the streets of London. This will clearly identity the genre of my music magazine and being aimed at young people. I also would want to include very stereotypical images associated with R&B such as aggression, violence, drugs etc but in a more fashionable.
Even though rap music is mainly associated with males, in my magazine I'm going to use a lot of females in my photoshoots as this will make my magazine more unique by showing powerful and strong women throughout.

Names Ideas

Using simply just a pen and paper i decide to create a brainstorm of names ideas for my music magazine.
I decided to brainstorm words that were associated with a stereotypical R&B music and urban slang that my target audience were likely to use. I came up with a wide range of name ideas as this would give me a lot of variety to chose from and give me the best possible name .
I found it very difficult to chose a name for my music magazine due to knowning how important a quality name is to make the magazine memorable. I believed my best name ideas were; OnPoint, Off The Chain , Prestige and Takeover.
Recieving verbal feedback from friends and peers I decided to call my magazine OnPoint. This is due to being an urban/slang word so would relate to my target audience of young people as they are likely to use this word or be similar with it. The name OnPoint highlights that everything included in the magazine is on on trend and the best of the best. The artists included will be only the best and the fashion seen in the magazine will be 'on point'. My magazine's name also clearly states the genre of the magazine to the audience as OnPoint is typically used by R&B artists in their songs or seen used by the famous artists themselves in interviews.

Production Diary #6

This week i have been thinking more in detail about my magazine, the name, mastheads, layout, colour scheme etc. I first decided it is the most important part of the magazine to have a name. The name of the magazine is key to whether your magazines becomes memoriable or not. After doing my existing names and mastheads, i had a idea of what names work well in certain times of magazines. I realised that both connations or acryonms worked best as they already give a feel to the magazine and indicate the type of target audience.
First i decided to brainstorm words that came to me when thinking about stereotypical R&B/ urban words/slang that my target audience were likely to use themselves.I came out with a variety of names to give me a lot of range to chose from to give me the best name. Even though coming up with names wasn't fairly too hard, i found it diffcult to actually pick one. I decided to show my brainstorm to my siblings and friends to get there feedback on what names stood out to them. It showed that OnPoint,Off The Chain,Standout,Prestige were the favourites.
Finally after a lot of thinking about what best would fit my R&B magazine, i thought OnPoint would be the best name because it is a very urban word used by many young people to describe something that is the best of the best and is on trend.
After coming up with my music magazine name i thought it would best to move on to my masthead. I already had clearly in mind that i wanted it to be big and bold font seen in many magazines such as Vibe and XXL. Using Dafonts i downloaded a variety of fonts that could be possibly be used as my masthead. I then printed my name out several times and change the font/size/width with all of them to figure out what looked good and what didn't.
